We spent the morning and beginning of the afternoon whale watching out of Húsavík, which is something I had never done before.  I would have considered it a success if we had seen just one whale, but during our 2.5 hours on the water we saw several humpback whales and an entire pod of orcas, one of which was a calf!

After researching the different options for whale watching tours, we booked our tour through Gentle Giants, and opted to go with the ‘Big Whale Safari and Puffins’ tour – two and a half hours on a guided speedboat that took us out of the bay into deeper, more open waters, as well as to Puffin Island, which was swarming with the funny little birds which had come to that island from all over to mate.  It cost about $170 per person, which was entirely worth it for me.  This is definitely something you will want to book ahead of time!

Unfortunately, the rest of our day was taken up by an almost 8 hour drive from Húsavík to our campground, Tungudalur, a camping card site that left us in a good position for the adventures we had planned for the next day.
